93 counties remain for now

LINCOLN (AP) -- Nebraska counties won't disappear anytime soon.

A legislative committee announced Tuesday it had killed a bill, LB826, that would have required lawmakers to study how to reduce the number of counties.

Guidelines in the bill called for a committee to come up with a plan to reduce to about 30 the number of counties in Nebraska.

There are 93.

County officials and other opponents of the bill say eliminating some counties wouldn't necessarily save money and that counties are already sharing services and requiring employees to perform multiple jobs.

Nebraska's 93 counties were created in pioneer days so residents could travel to their county seats and return to their homes the same day.
