Highlights of mayor's speech

Snow, potholes: Mayor Jim Suttle acknowledged the efforts of city workers who have “worked aggressively 24 hours a day to clear our streets and make them safe for our first responders, motorists and pedestrians. ... Our crews went to work and stayed at work, away from their families and friends over the holidays.” He said work continues as city crews tackle potholes.

The arts: Omaha is “blessed by cultural facilities that make us the gem of America's Midwest.” Suttle cited the variety of small and large performing arts venues; development on the riverfront, including the Bob Kerrey Pedestrian Bridge; and improvements to parks, lakes and recreational trails.

Violence: Suttle advocated a three-pronged approach to violence prevention: education, employment and enforcement. “We must never let up on efforts to reduce violence, keep illegal guns out of the hands of those who break the law and prevent our young people from giving in to the temptations of gangs.”

‘A statesman for Omaha': Suttle paid tribute to Councilman Chuck Sigerson, who announced last week that he will resign from the City Council after suffering a heart attack and stroke in August. “Chuck, we will miss you at City Hall.”

Technology: The mayor is now on Facebook and Twitter. He also has a revamped Web site, www.cityofomaha.org/mayor.
