I-29 finally reopens

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The final stretch of snow-plugged Interstate 29 in western Iowa has reopened.

State transportation officials say the southbound lanes of the highway from Sioux City south to Onawa, about 36 miles, opened on Tuesday.

This was the last stretch of I-29 to be opened since a winter storm that began on Sunday.

A 60-mile stretch of the interstate was initially closed on Sunday in both directions from Missouri Valley to Sioux City because of numerous accidents caused by blowing and drifting snow that created whiteout conditions.

Officials say all stranded motorists were rescued.
