Rachel Bloom, a Creighton University senior, and Gail Jensen, dean of the graduate school and associate vice president for academic affairs, received the 2010 Mary Lucretia and Sarah Emily Creighton Awards during Creighton's annual Committee on the Status of Women Founders Week luncheon.
Bloom has been instrumental in organizing and participating in the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice. She has been a resident adviser for two years and is a member of Delta Zeta sorority.
Jensen was recognized for her support of achievement for women and for her advocacy. She created the Office of Online Learning and has served as a team leader for the Higher Learning Commission.
Jordan Somer, 16, of Papillion and Jaden Moore, 13, of Norfolk were named Nebraska's top two youth volunteers for 2010 in the Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program. The awards program is conducted by Prudential Financial in partnership with the National Association of Secondary School Principals.
Jordan was nominated by Omaha Central High School and Jaden by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension 4-H program in Norfolk. Each will receive $1,000, an engraved silver medallion and a trip in May to Washington, D.C.
James Saker, professor of music and director of university bands at the University of Nebraska at Omaha, received the 2009-10 Distinguished Service Award from the Board of the Nebraska Music Educators Association at the organization's annual meeting in Lincoln. Saker has served in a variety of roles with the association, including college/university affairs chairman and president.
Liz Vercruysse and John Martelle of Big Table Studios in Herman, Neb., were named the Nebraska Loess Hills Resource Conservation & Development Council's artists for the month of February. A former Iowa National Guardsman, Brig. Gen. Patrick Murphy, has been named the 52nd adjutant general of New York. Previously the assistant adjutant general and the director of joint staff for New York, Murphy took on his new role this week. Murphy is a 32-year veteran of the Army National Guard and has been responsible for the New York National Guard's state emergency and homeland security operations.
