Bemidji series is big; will crowds be, too?

9:07 p.m.: Omaha sports fans have a chance to show off their hockey IQs this weekend, when UNO hosts a huge nonconference series against Bemidji State.

Sure, it's easy to get people's attention when the Mavs are hosting Michigan, Ohio State, Notre Dame or Michigan State. But what kind of crowds will show up at the Qwest Center this weekend when the Beavers (no, not the ones from Oregon State) travel the road to Omaha?

Here's hoping the turnout will match the importance of these games.

You've never seen Bemidji State play in a BCS bowl game. You've never pondered picking this northern Minnesota school for an upset on your NCAA tournament hoops bracket.

But rest assured, the team coming to town on Friday and Saturday plays some serious college hockey.

UNO and Bemidji State together are set to join the WCHA next season. This weekend's series will light the fuse on what should be an intense rivalry in the future.

Bemidji State made a magical run to the NCAA Frozen Four last season, coming just one win short of playing Boston University for all the marbles.

In 2009-10, the Beavers have proved that was no fluke.

They are 21-7-2, ranked ninth in the country and are tied for No. 4 in the national RPI. They've turned in convincing victories over Northern Michigan and the University of Minnesota. They also knocked off No. 1 Miami. They have positioned themselves well for a return trip to the NCAA tournament, and the Mavs just might join them if they can get a win or two this weekend in Omaha.

And so, the stage is set for what really and truly has turned into the biggest weekend on UNO's home schedule. If you have any desire to see the Mavs make it back to “the Big Skate” that is the college hockey postseason, you'll show up at the rink on Friday and Saturday, and you'll make a whole lot of noise.
