LINCOLN (AP) — Nebraska lawmakers want to shame delinquent taxpayers into paying what they owe.
Under a bill that got first-round approval on Tuesday, the names of taxpayers owing the state more than $20,000 would be posted on the Web site of either the state Department of Revenue or Department of Labor.
Besides names and addresses, the list would include the type and amount of the tax or fee owed.
An amendment to the bill (LB879) would allow posting the names of only those who had waived their rights to appeal tax rulings or had exhausted the appeals process and lost.
There are about 500 taxpayers who owe more than $20,000, but that number includes some duplication, as corporate officers can be listed for the same debt.
