LINCOLN - In a legislative first, people attending this afternoon's hearing on a bill to ban abortions at 20 weeks will have to pass through a metal detector.
Capitol security officers set up the machine this morning outside the Judiciary Committee's hearing room.
No specific threats had been reported, according to officials.
Rather, the measure was taken in response to the potential appearance of Dr. LeRoy Carhart, a Bellevue abortion provider who has said he will perform late-term abortions.
One of Carhart's colleagues, Dr. George Tiller of Wichita, Kan., was killed by a gunman last year at his church.
Lawmakers are to hear testimony on Legislative Bill 1103, introduced by Speaker of the Legislature Mike Flood of Norfolk.
