LINCOLN - Nebraska's fiscal fitness would qualify the state for a bronze medal, according to a new ranking by Forbes Magazine.
The magazine listed the state as third healthiest among the 50 states - with the smallest amount of state government debt per person and the smallest amount of unfunded pension obligations per person.
Nebraska also ranked well on the magazine's "moocher ratio," which compares government employees, pension burdens and Medicaid enrollees to private-sector employment.
The magazine looked at a dozen or so factors, including unfunded pension liabilities, changes in tax revenue, debt as a percentage of GDP, debt per capita, growth expectations for employment and the state economy, net migrations and the moocher ratio.
