Family Outings: Disney Magic on Ice

The Olympics are over, but you can still catch some ice princesses this weekend.

“Disney on Ice” will bring all its princesses, along with dozens of other characters like Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Stitch, Buzz Lightyear, Woody, Nemo and the Incredibles, to the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs Thursday through Sunday.

Dazzling sets, memorable characters, beautiful costumes and special effects will transport audiences through 100 years of Disney stories. Moments from Disney movies and numbers set to songs such as “When You Wish Upon a Star,” “Under the Sea” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” will keep kids of all ages entertained.

Tickets for “Disney on Ice Celebrates 100 Years of Magic” are $15 to $55 and available through Ticketmaster (ticketmaster.com or 800-745-3000) or at the Mid-America Center box office. Showtimes are 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday; 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. Sunday.

The eighth annual Council Bluffs Home Improvement and Landscaping Show offers all the ideas and information you could need for your home or garden.

In addition to all the exhibitors, the show will offer seminars covering topics such as kitchen design, geothermal energy, lawn care and pond construction.

The show, at the Mid-America Center in Council Bluffs, will run from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Admission is $6 and is free to youth 12 and under. Admission is only $3 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday. Discount vouchers are available at local Hy-Vee Supermarkets and online at www.iowashows.com. The Web site also has more information on the show, including a seminar schedule.

OMAHA

Youngsters can play a role in circus fun

The big top may have left town, but you can still get in on the circus act.

Stilt walkers, jugglers, hula hoopers and other circus performers will star at the Omaha Children's Museum, 500 S. 20th St., for the First Friday Family Date Night.

The museum stays open till 8 p.m. on the first Friday of each month during the winter, offering different themed activities each month.

Friday's activities will kick off about 5 p.m. In addition to watching circus performers, kids can make a circus train craft, have their face painted like a clown, and participate in the circus parade. Everyone is invited to come dressed up as someone from the circus.

All activities are included with regular museum admission: adults and kids $7; seniors 60 and older, $6; kids under 2, free. Supper is available from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. from McKenna's Blues Booze & Barbecue for an extra $4 for adults or $2 for children, which includes a sandwich (or hot dog for kids), chips and drink.

LINCOLN

Toe-tapping revue a taste of big band era

Come celebrate the greats of the 1940s big band era like Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw and Benny Goodman.

The theatrical swing revue “In the Mood” will have you dancing in the aisles to such classic favorites as “Moonlight Serenade,” “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” “Sing, Sing, Sing” and “I'll Be Seeing You.”

In 1993, World USO selected “In the Mood” to be the official entertainment for the 50th commemoration of World War II. Since then, the show has traveled to 46 states, Canada and Europe, and in 1997, was invited to perform at a presidential inauguration ball. The show's current tour stops at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N. 12th St. in Lincoln, on Tuesday for a 7:30 p.m. performance.

A pre-performance talk will be held in the Lied Center's Steinhart Room. Seating there is limited, and the pre-talk will begin a half hour before curtain or when the room is full.
