Omaha Herb Society will host an “Herb Retreat” from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Lauritzen Gardens, 100 Bancroft St. Various herb stations will show participants ways to incorporate herbs in cooking, crafts and lifestyle. Participants will gather recipes, ideas and techniques through hands-on demonstrations. Cost is $10 for members and $13 for nonmembers.

Tuesday

The Nebraska Rural Initiative and the Nebraska Local Foods Network will hold a conference on “Expanding Nebraska’s Local Foods.” Hours will be from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in the East Campus Union of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Highlights will include: Robert Gravani, food science professor and director of the national Good Agricultural Practices program at Cornell University; Lynn Fallon, Midwest region farm-to-school network coordinator; and Chris Kirby, Oklahoma farm-to-school coordinator. Breakout sessions will cover: a marketing/distribution center, farm-to-school or beginning producer education and curriculum.

Wednesday

Starting a community garden will be the theme of a workshop from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Extension Office for Douglas and Sarpy Counties, 8015 West Center Road.

This is free training for those who want to start a community garden. Register in advance with Patty Falcone, 444-7146.

March 13

Homeowners can ask questions and get expert advice on their trees at the fifth annual Gretna Tree Talk. The free event will feature tree and horticulture experts Jim Keepers, Sara Browning, Dr. Elden Everhart and Amy Ziems Timmerman, as well as certified Nebraska arborists and Gretna landscapers and nurserymen.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m. The sessions wrap up at 12:30 p.m. at Squire John Thomas Elementary School, 11221 Northridge Drive in Gretna (Highway 370 and 200th Street).

Proper pruning of young trees will be among the topics at the program hosted by the Gretna Arbor Society and sponsored by the Nebraska Arborists Association. The West Pottawattamie Soil and Water Conservation District will sponsor two rain barrel workshops, both running from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Cost is free, or pay $25 and build a rain barrel and fixtures, materials included.

The Atlantic (Iowa) Spring Garden Seminar on the Iowa Western Community College campus will offer expertise in everything from growing and preserving vegetables to container gardening from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The schedule is set up with four hour-long sessions, each from a selection of 11 seminars.
