Iwo Jima veterans invited to dinner
To mark the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II, the Strategic Air and Space Museum is inviting area Iwo Jima veterans to be its guests at March 26-27 events. The island was declared secured on March 26, 1945.
The veterans will attend a dinner for six Marines who served side-by-side with the Marines and Navy corpsman whose flag-raising atop the island's Mount Suribachi was captured in one of the most famous photographs taken during the war.
These six Marines are veterans of the 5th Marine Division, 28th Marines, Easy Company, and their stories have been immortalized in the book and film “Flags of Our Fathers.” Four of the six are Purple Heart recipients, and one is a Silver Star recipient.
On March 27, the six Marines will gather at the Ashland, Neb., museum for autographs and a book-signing.
Iwo Jima veterans who would like to attend should call 402-944-3100, ext. 245. Others who wish to attend the dinner can register by phone at 800-595-4849 or at www.SASMuseum.com.
