LOS ANGELES — No. 19 UCLA surpassed the start of its 1997 College World Series team by sweeping Nebraska 13-1 and 5-3 in a doubleheader Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Sophomore pitcher Gerrit Cole silenced Nebraska in the opener, limiting the Huskers to two hits in seven innings. The 6-foot-4 right-hander, a first-round draft pick of the Yankees in 2008 and Team USA star last summer, struck out nine.
UCLA (8-0) scored four runs in the first inning in the opener and knocked Nebraska starter Sean Yost from the game after 1-1⁄3 innings. Yost, a sophomore out of Lincoln Southwest, allowed five runs on five hits.
After NU right fielder Adam Bailey homered in the top of the fourth, UCLA scored five runs in the bottom half on home runs by Justin Uribe and Steve Rodriguez to take a 12-1 lead.
In the nightcap, Trevor Bauer struck out 10 in 6-2⁄3 innings. Nebraska managed 10 hits, including a 3-for-4 performance by left fielder Khiry Cooper.
The Huskers (3-6) scored twice in the eighth inning on two-out hits by Cooper and Kale Kiser, but Dan Klein escaped the jam as DJ Belfonte grounded to first with the bases loaded.
Nebraska starting pitcher Michael Mariot left after allowing a run in the seventh inning.
After Tyler Farst was thrown out trying to score from first base on a double by Cody Asche with none out in the second inning, UCLA scored four runs in the next three innings.
The series is set to conclude with a 3 p.m. game Saturday.
