STILLWATER, Okla. — Nebraska has set the kind of men’s basketball history it won’t want to remember.
The Huskers’ 74-55 loss to Oklahoma State on Saturday dropped them to 2-14 in the Big 12. No NU team had ever lost that many league games before.
The previous worst was 1-13 in 1962-63 under Jerry Bush and 3-13 in 2002-03 under Barry Collier.
Nebraska (14-17), which trailed for all 40 minutes in its previous game, led for only 24 seconds against Oklahoma State — 9-8 after a 3-pointer from guard Lance Jeter.
The Huskers were still within a point after guard Ray Gallegos’ fast-break layup with 12:28 to go.
Then came another of NU’s nasty offensive droughts — scoreless for the next 7:18.
Oklahoma State scored 18 points in a row to go up 30-11, and the Cowboys (21-9, 9-7) jogged to the win from there, leading 38-19 at halftime and by as many as 29 points in the second half.
“We’re a vulnerable basketball team right now,” NU coach Doc Sadler said on his postgame radio show. “When things don’t go well and the other team makes a little bit of a run early, we probably lose a little confidence or hope or whatever the word is you want to use.”
OSU junior forward James Anderson, the Big 12’s leading scorer at 22.8 points per game (24 in league play), led all scorers with 25 points in 32 minutes.
Nebraska got 16 points from guard Brandon Richardson and 14 from forward Christian Standhardinger.
“The guys tried to play hard,” Sadler said. “But we’re 2-14. They’re frustrated. They don’t have a lot of confidence.”
