This year, The World-Herald celebrates its 125th birthday. Here’s a sampling of what’s been happening all these years from the pages of our newspaper.
Annexed neighborhood has a gripe about garbage
March 6, 1956: Trash troubles were causing a stink in the Robin Hill neighborhood near 45th and Grover Streets. The city had annexed the area at the beginning of the year but said it didn’t have the funds to start garbage collection until April 1. Trouble was, the city had been collecting trash in the area since the houses were first occupied in 1953. In the confusion, city collection stopped, private haulers were contracted. The city changed its mind, private contractors were canceled ... and then the city changed its mind again, creating a literal and figurative stink in the neighborhood.
1970: The Bellevue school board voted to start charging tuition to nonresident Air Force children after a reduction in federal aid the school received to help pay for the students’ education. The Pentagon was discussing how to respond. At the time, 80 percent of Bellevue’s students were children of Air Force families or had other federal connections, though the percentage of nonresident families had not been calculated.
1970: Omaha boys had the chance to dress just like Jody (Johnny Whitaker) from “Family Affair.” Brandeis was bringing the young TV star for appearances at Southroads and Crossroads Malls and at the Brandeis store downtown.
2003: The Omaha Planning Board demanded more upgrades to the designs of the Home Depot, Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores planned for the former Avaya site at 132nd and L Streets but sent the plans on to the City Council for final approval.
