    Ex-Husker's daughter picks Nebraska

Liz Sundberg said for her, there really is no place like Nebraska.

That's why even though she talked with the University of Nebraska at Omaha and Iowa State, there was never any doubt about where the Lincoln Southwest junior would play soccer in college.

“I had known for a long time that I really wanted to go to Nebraska,” she said. “It was pretty much like that was it for me.”

Sundberg grew up around the Husker athletic program because her father is former NU quarterback Craig Sundberg. They have attended a lot of games together.

Liz already has graced a poster and the cover of the Husker media guide. She and several other 1-year-olds, including soccer coach John Walker's daughter Ally, were pictured on the 1994 version. The theme was “Birth of a New Tradition” and they were shown wearing Nebraska T-shirts and holding soccer balls.

Liz and Ally are still good friends and both play soccer for Southwest, though Ally hasn't decided if she'll play in college.

Liz is a forward, but she isn't sure what position she'll play for the Huskers. She's just glad the decision is behind her so she can concentrate on the upcoming season.

Southwest graduated nine seniors, eight of them starters.

“We'll have some good talent, we'll just have to work a lot harder,'' she said.

    NU's other commitments

Sundberg is just one of several area soccer players who have made a commitment to Nebraska.

Others include Samantha Areman (Norris) of the Capitol Soccer Association in Lincoln, Amy Swearer (Lincoln Lutheran), Kylie Kusleika (Omaha Westside), Jackie Tondl (Omaha Marian), Alyssa Flannery (Millard North), Chelsi Rohloff (Papillion-La Vista) and Jaylyn Odermann (Omaha Duchesne) from Toro Soccer Club and Jourdan Casey (Westside), Hannah Dittmar (Gretna), Megan Merrill (Millard West) and Ashley Hick (Millard North) from the Omaha Football Club.
