Football: Former Husker to receive award

WORLD-HERALD PRESS SERVICES

LINCOLN — Former Nebraska linebacker Blake Lawrence will receive the “Everyday Hero” award from the Brain Injury Association of Nebraska at its annual Awareness Day on Wednesday at the State Capitol.

Lawrence had a series of concussions during his Husker career before stepping away from the team after three games last season.

Lawrence, from Shawnee Mission, Kan., was a 2008 Academic All-Big 12 player who graduated last December and is now studying for his MBA.

“Blake brought tremendous awareness to the impact of sports concussions last year and perhaps even prevented injuries by his example,” said Kate Kulesher Jarecke of the Brain Injury Association of Nebraska. “We are honored that Blake is taking time to meet with our members and continues to help educate others about the ramifications of sports concussions.

“His example of the importance of being your own advocate and the support he received from the coaching staff are a testament to the Husker football program.”

In recognition of March as Brain Injury Awareness Month, the Brain Injury Association of Nebraska is participating in a nationwide education and advocacy campaign: “A Concussion is a Brain Injury. Get the Facts.”
