School calorie cuts successful

NEW YORK (AP) — The beverage industry says that drinks sold in schools are getting healthier.

Former President Bill Clinton gave an update on the effort Monday in Manhattan with officials from the American Beverage Association and the American Heart Association.

The industry group says the number of beverage calories shipped to schools dropped by 88 percent from 2004 to 2009.

Clinton says he is "stunned by the results."

The voluntary initiative, begun in May 2006, is aimed at replacing full-calorie soft drinks with lower-calorie, smaller-portion beverages. It covers school vending machines, lunch lines and anywhere drinks are sold during the school day.

The William J. Clinton Foundation and the Heart Association started the Alliance for a Healthier Generation in 2005 to fight childhood obesity.
