DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- The National Weather Service has posted flood warnings across portions of Iowa as meteorologists say a combination of melting snow and forecast rain will combine to lead to flooding.
Weather service meteorologist Jeff Johnson in Des Moines said Tuesday that Iowans should keep an eye on river forecasts. Johnson says the flooding possibilities will continue for the next several days across the state.
As of now, Johnson says the peak is expected to come later this week through next week.
Johnson says the flooding depends on how fast the snow melts and how much rain falls on top of it.
Meanwhile, Iowa business owners are being urged to prepare for any potential flooding this season.
The executive director of the Safeguard Iowa Partnership, Jami Haberl, said Tuesday that taking precautions could help “minimize danger, reduce property damage and speed the recovery process.” Gov. Chet Culver has proclaimed March as Flood Awareness Month.
The partnership encourages businesses to consider evacuation and readiness plans as well as personal safety precautions.
Haberl also says flooding predictions are a good time for residents to check if their tetanus booster shots are up to date.
The group is a voluntary coalition of Iowa business and government leaders intended to integrate resources during all phases of disaster management.
