DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — The state plans to eliminate at least 13 boards and commissions as part of a cost-cutting government reorganization measure, but don't look for that move to pay off in much savings.
Officials say most of the panels being closed rarely met and ran up few expenses. Few of the state's 181 advisory committees will be touched, and no paid staff people will lose their jobs due to eliminating the panels.
Gov. Chet Culver is set to sign the measure Wednesday, eliminating the boards as part of an efficiency plan that also centralizes purchasing and computer system, merges some smaller agencies and streamlines larger departments. Officials estimate the measure will save $127 million annually, but little of that will come from the boards and commissions.
