OGALLALA, Neb. (AP) -- A candidate for sheriff in western Nebraska has been arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.
The Nebraska State Patrol says Jeff Stevens was pulled over for speeding Friday night on U.S. Highway 30 in Ogallala.
The trooper says Stevens smelled of alcohol, so a sobriety test was administered, and Stevens failed.
The patrol says Stevens was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and taken to Keith County jail.
Stevens is a candidate to oversee that jail as sheriff of Keith County. County elections commissioner Sandra Olson said Tuesday that Stevens has filed his candidacy papers. The incumbent is Kevin Mueller.
Stevens did not immediately return a phone call from The Associated Press. Court records don't list his attorney's name.
