    IOWA BOYS BASKETBALL

Notes: Cochran to be honored at title game

DES MOINES — When he graduated from Tri-Center High School in 1997, Cary Cochran held Iowa's career scoring record.

Thirteen years later, he returns to be inducted into the Iowa High School Athletic Association's basketball hall of fame. Cochran is one of seven former players and three former coaches who will enter this year's hall of fame at halftime of Saturday's Class 4-A championship game at Wells Fargo Arena.

Playing for his father, hall of fame coach Carl, the younger Cochran led Tri-Center to state tournaments in 1995 and 1997. He ended his career with 2,650 points and 352 3-pointers, both state-bests at the time. He averaged 28.5 points for his four-year career and was a three-time all-stater.

Cochran went on to play at Nebraska, where he shattered school 3-point records for career (268), season (89) and game (8). He led the NCAA in free-throw percentage in 2002 at 92.2 percent. Cochran currently works for Wells Fargo Bank in Council Bluffs.

The other hall of fame players are Boyden-Hull's Loren DeKruyf, Winfield-Mount Union's Klay Edwards, Ames' Chuck Harmison, Humboldt's Jamie Lilly, Aquin's Brian McDermott and Diagonal's Bob Ricker.

The hall of fame coaches are Mason City's Bob Horner, Webster City's Bob Josten and Waterloo East's Steve McGraw.

    Bradshaw among officials joining hall

Three men with western Iowa ties will enter the officials' hall of fame this weekend: Dennis Bradshaw, Edward Conway and David Wyckoff.

Bradshaw is a Dayton native who began his teaching and coaching career at Ar-We-Va and later became a respected football official, working 23 playoff games in 16 years, including three championship games. He currently resides in Carroll.

Conway is a Council Bluffs resident who has worked 14 boys state soccer tournaments and 12 girls state soccer tournaments, including one championship game.

Wyckoff was a four-sport star at Bedford who went on to become the longtime principal at Ar-We-Va. A three-sport official, he worked 23 football playoff games in 19 years, including two finals. He worked numerous postseason contests in basketball and baseball. He currently lives in Bella Vista, Ark.

    Mason was an innovator

Among those receiving administrator awards will be Glenn Mason. The school districts of Murray, Fremont-Mills and Clarence-Lowden were reorganized during his tenure. He implemented the football program at Murray, the golf program at Lowden and the volleyball programs at Lowden and Villisca.

Two others with ties to Harlan will receive sports medicine awards this week, Kelli Blum and Dr. Larry Kintner.

Blum is a Harlan Community graduate who works at the Winneshiek Medical Center and currently provides coverage to four high schools: Decorah, Postville, Turkey Valley and South Winneshiek.

Dr. Kintner also is a Harlan graduate and has served as the team physician for the Harlan football team for the past 20 years.

    Journalists Nielson, Wiser earn award

Journalists Donald Nielson and Lori Wiser are among those receiving news media awards this week.

A graduate of Coon Rapids High School, Nielson has been the publisher of the Avoca Journal-Herald for 36 years and the Oakland Journal for 16 years. He has excelled in sports photography while at the Journal-Herald.

Wiser graduated from Woodbine High School and has held a number of roles since joining the Ocheyedan Press-Melvin News in 1988. She has been active in the Iowa Newspaper Association. Wiser has had to scale back her workload recently while awaiting a heart transplant.
