12 applied for Sigerson's term

A Democratic contender has emerged for the vacant seat on the Omaha City Council.

Gary Kudym formally applied Tuesday to replace Chuck Sigerson, a Republican who resigned.

Kudym is an insurance agent whose business credentials could be seen as an asset by some council members.

Wednesday is the last day to apply for the District 7 seat, which encompasses much of northwest Omaha.

Kudym was headed out of town and unavailable for comment.

A Democrat could have an edge for the officially nonpartisan seat, since Democrats hold a 4-2 majority on the council.

Tuesday afternoon, on the eve of the deadline, 12 people had applied for the seat. The others:

Dennis Brown, Randy Brown, Sam Christiansen, Flor P. Del Mundo, Douglas Lane, Patrick J. Leahy, Tim Lonergan, Thomas Mulligan, Jeri Regan, Tom Trouba and Scott Yahnke.

Other possible candidates are Kris Pierce, a Democratic consultant who has dropped out of the race for secretary of state, and Kyle Hutchings, a Republican Douglas County Board member who isn't seeking re-election.

Sigerson's successor will serve out the remainder of his term, until spring 2013. The council is scheduled to vote April 13 on his replacement.

Applicants must have lived in District 7 for at least six months, be at least 18 years old and be registered to vote. They must submit a letter, résumé and petition signed by at least 50 registered voters in District 7.
