Police investigate shaken baby

The La Vista Police Department and the Department of Health and Human Services say they are investigating a shaken baby case that's left a 3-month-old child in intensive care.

La Vista officers were called to an unlicensed day care provider inside an apartment at 7109 S. 83rd St. at 8:30 Wednesday morning, where they found the unresponsive infant.

Officers performed CPR on the child, who was transported to Bergan Mercy Medical Center, and later to the pediatric intensive care unit at Children's Hospital & Medical Center.

The infant is currently sedated and suffering from serious internal brain injuries, said La Vista Police Chief Bob Lausten.

The child's mother left the infant with the caregiver early Wednesday morning, police said. The babysitter and her boyfriend both live at the apartment.

"Obviously we're looking at who was the last caregiver for the baby," Lausten said. The investigation is ongoing.

Wednesday's case is the year's second high-profile shaken baby case that involves a caregiver.

In February, Staff Sgt. Jason Johnsen with the Nebraska Air National Guard was allowed an emergency leave from Afghanistan to visit his infant daughter after she was critically injured in a shaking incident.

Pamela Johnson, a 26-year-old Bellevue child care provider, is free on bail and facing charges in the Feb. 11 incident.

She's been charged with first-degree assault and child abuse. She told paramedics the baby had fallen, but was later arrested.
