The opening of the Two Rivers State Recreation Area trout lake west of Omaha is tentatively scheduled for Saturday.
Ice conditions on the lake are unstable for ice fishing, and there is little water access from the bank.
Nebraska Game and Parks Commission personnel at Two Rivers are evaluating conditions daily. For updated conditions before making a trip to the lake, call the recreation area at 402-359-5165 or go to OutdoorNebraska.org.
The lake is stocked seasonally with rainbow trout and will be open from 7 a.m. to sunset each day. Anglers must have a 2010 Nebraska fishing permit and a daily trout tag, which may be purchased from the Two Rivers office. The $4 tag allows the taking of four trout.
An angler may purchase up to three tags a day and is allowed 12 trout in possession. An adult angler is allowed to have two children under age 16 fish under the authority of his or her trout tag, but the group still is limited to four trout per tag. Anglers may use one fishing rod and reel each. Trout that are caught may not be released.
Anglers possessing trout on any other lake at Two Rivers must also have a trout tag. Anglers must return their tag to the office at the end of their fishing day because information collected from each tag is critical in helping fisheries biologists determine catch rates and stocking rates.
Anglers will find that lighter tackle work well for trout. Most anglers use 4- to 6- pound test line and small hooks, such as size 12 or 14. Nightcrawlers, salmon eggs, or PowerBait are good baits, as are small spinners.
Two Rivers is located near Venice in Douglas County. All vehicles entering the park must have a park entry permit.
