Life Light

By Susan White

The knock on the door came with the proverbial request for a cup of sugar. The ending was just as sweet.

Wanda Hamilton was on the loaning end of the story, which happened several years ago, she said, when her neighbor boy was about 4 years old.

The boy, obviously sent by his mother and carrying a measuring cup, said they were making a cake and needed a cup of sugar.

Hamilton obliged, filling up his measuring cup and sending him back home.

About five minutes later, there was another knock.

“Thank you,” the boy said, and ran back home.

Hamilton said she still smiles at the manners lesson his mom must have insisted on.

Sugar, spice and everything nice, indeed.
