City Council applicant disqualified

One of the applicants for the Omaha City Council vacancy has been disqualified.

Petitions submitted by Gary DeVeney were invalid, said Dave Phipps, Douglas County election commissioner.

“He mistakenly had his pages notarized prior to gathering his signatures, so we couldn’t accept any of his pages,” Phipps said Friday in an e-mail.

That leaves 16 candidates for the District 7 seat vacated by Chuck Sigerson.

Their petitions were all verified, Phipps said.

DeVeney was one of five Democrats who applied for the officially nonpartisan seat. Nine Republicans and three independents also applied.

Council President Garry Gernandt has said the finalists will be announced March 23.

They will be interviewed April 6 at a public meeting, and the council will select the new member at its April 13 meeting. — Maggie O’Brien
