DENISON, Iowa — The Crawford County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved a $17.3 million budget for the coming fiscal year.
The property tax levy rates per $1,000 of valuation approved by the board for 2011 are $6.88 in urban areas, a decrease of 48 cents, and $11.36 in rural areas, a decrease of 58 cents.
“Valuations went up this year so we were able to lower the levy — not the tax asking, but the levy,” said Crawford County Budget Director Chuck Ettleman.
Property valuations are determined by the county assessor.
The county is expecting an increase in tax revenue of about $300,000 because of the valuation increases, Ettleman said.
Changes for the 2011 fiscal year include paying for two sheriff’s deputies’ salaries and benefits from the general fund instead of the rural fund.
Ettleman said this change would free about $150,000 in the secondary roads budget, which will be used to purchase additional rock for road surfaces.
Another change is using money from the general fund for one-time expenditures.
Specific projects are paving the road from Iowa Highway 39 to the landfill scale house and building a fueling station for use by several governmental entities.
The fiscal year 2011 budget that begins July 1 is about $917,000 less than the current fiscal year.
