DENISON, Iowa — An official with the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation is looking into an allegation of inappropriate purchases in the Denison Fire Department, City Manager Kevin Flanagan said.

Flanagan confirmed that Duane Zenk, an assistant fire chief, presented a formal complaint to interim Fire Chief Mike Schrum about purchases made by former Fire Chief Mike McKinnon.

According to Department of Criminal Investigation spokeswoman Courtney Greene, the meeting in Denison on Thursday was to “get the facts and determine ... if there has been any wrongdoing.”

An official investigation isn’t under way, Greene said.

Flanagan forwarded the complaint to Crawford County Sheriff Jim Steinkuehler, who notified the state investigation agency.

The city manager said the Iowa Auditor’s Office also will send a representative to Denison.

The city manager said no other information about the inquiry is being released.
