The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking information about bull elk remains found along Salt Creek north of Waverly.
The remains, mostly the head and hide, had been at the location for at least several weeks.
“It’s very possible it was legally harvested and butchered and then illegally dumped,’’ said Duane Arp, the Game and Parks chief law enforcement officer in southeast Nebraska. “We don’t know what we’ve got for sure.’’
A bull elk was seen in the Lincoln area during the winter. Arp said it’s impossible to know if the remains are from that elk.
Nebraska’s elk hunting season is limited to permit holders in a region generally west of Kearney and O’Neill. It is a violation of state game laws to shoot an elk that wanders into eastern Nebraska.
Nebraska’s elk population continues to grow and is expected to hit about 2,300 animals after this calving season.
Anyone with information about the dead elk should call a conservation officer or Nebraska Wildlife Crimestoppers toll-free at 800-742-7627. If violations of game laws are involved in the case, callers may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
