Journalism Awards: Sports staff, writers haul in honors in AP contest

The World-Herald sports staff came away with four honors, including Top 10 daily sports section and Top 10 special section, in judging earlier this week of the Associated Press Sports Editors' writing and section contests in Kissimmee, Fla.

The World-Herald, competing in the 100,000-250,000 circulation category, also won honorable mention for its Sunday sports section, ranking it among the Top 20 papers in its circulation category.

Also, staff writers Dirk Chatelain and Lee Barfknecht earned a Top 10 finish in breaking news for a story on which they collaborated to detail the moments after the Nebraska football team's last-second loss to Texas in the Big 12 championship game in December.

The World-Herald's special section that earned Top 10 honors was its 2009 college football section. The daily and Sunday section awards are based on judging of four sections each, two mandatory dates assigned by APSE and two dates of the editor's choice.

Only three newspapers in the 100,000-250,000 circulation category earned the coveted Triple Crown, which consists of a Top 10 finish in all three section contests. They were the Seattle Times, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and New Orleans Times-Picayune.
