7 Western Iowa players on all-state first teams

Eighteen western Iowa boys basketball players have been named all-staters by the Iowa Newspaper Association, including seven who have received first-team recognition in their respective classes.

Western Iowa's first-team all-state picks are Bedford's Chris Lindenmeyer and Tim Schweitzer in Class 1-A; Sioux City Heelan's Zach McCabe and Alex Malloy, along with Carroll's Casey Kasperbauer and Harlan's Michael Kaufmann in Class 3-A; and Sioux City East's Adam Woodbury in Class 4-A.

In its annual all-state meeting last weekend in Des Moines, the INA's statewide panel of sportswriters also selected Ames senior Harrison Barnes as Iowa's Mr. Basketball.

A 6-foot-8, 209-pound senior who is committed to the University of North Carolina, Barnes finished his high school career as Ames' leading scorer with 1,787 points. The Little Cyclones defeated Southeast Polk on Saturday for the 4-A state championship, completing a 53-0 two-year run. Barnes was named MVP of the entire boys tournament and captain of the 4-A all-tournament team.

Barnes averaged 26.1 points and 10.9 rebounds this year. He was named a McDonald's All-American, Sporting News Prep Athlete of the Year and the Morgan Wootten Player of the Year. He is considered by many analysts to be the nation's top-ranked player in the 2010 class.

Back in western Iowa, McCabe, a 6-7 Iowa recruit, led Sioux City Heelan to back-to-back 3-A titles. He becomes a three-time all-stater, picking up third-team honors as a sophomore and first-team laurels last year.

Three other WI players become two-time all-staters. Carroll's Kasperbauer, a sophomore, and Harlan's Kaufmann, a senior, both move up from last year's 3-A second team. And in 1-A, Bedford's Schweitzer, a senior, was a third-team pick last season.

Five western Iowa players picked up second-team all-state honors: Council Bluffs St. Albert's Jake Waters in 1-A, Tri-Center's Josh Calhoon in 2-A, Carroll's Jordan Holdsworth and Denison-Schleswig's Ricky Torres in 3-A, and Sioux City North's Danny Rudeen in 4-A.

Six more earned third-team recognition in their respective classes: Orient-Macksburg's Michael Kaufman and Elk Horn-Kimballton's Carson Smith in 1-A, IKM-Manning's Bryce Irlbeck and Logan-Magnolia's Levi Ettleman in 2-A, Denison-Schleswig's Brandon Scherff in 3-A, and Sioux City East's Jordan Thomas in 4-A.
