Students involved in athletic, cheer, dance or step teams at all Omaha Public Schools high schools will be able to substitute a physical education class for another course.
The school board approved the pilot program on an 11-1 vote. Mona McGregor voted no.
This week the board heard from a representative of Live Well Omaha Kids, an associate professor who helped write the districts p.e. crriculum, a p.e.teacher and a Central High School athlete.
"Gym is important for us who are athletes," said Jaila Carter, 17. The cheerleader and track athlete said: "We're not always educated on being physically fit. It's also a way to relieve stress."
Those wishing to use the substitution will need the approval of a parent, guidance counselor and school administrator.
Board President Sandra Jensen after the vote: "We will monitor this and make sure what we see ... Is healthy students and provide them another opportinity."
