Diesel spills into Little Sioux

MILFORD, Iowa (AP) — The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is reporting a spill of diesel fuel into a tributary of the Little Sioux River.

According to natural resources officials, the spill occurred Sunday about two miles south of Milford in Dickinson County. There, a one-half inch pipe in a valve structure at the Magellan Pipeline Plant ruptured, spilling about 5,000 gallons of diesel fuel.

Authorities say an unknown amount of diesel fuel reached a Little Sioux River tributary. Some of fuel is believed to have reached the river.

Authorities say Magellan workers have placed absorbent booms across the tributary to prevent the diesel fuel from heading downstream. The company is pumping up the captured fuel.

Natural resources officials say the circumstances of the spill will be looked into and legal action considered.
