The Metropolitan Utilities District's board of directors voted unanimously Monday for retired Northern Natural Gas Co. executive Mike McGowan to complete the term of Mary Kay Begley, who died Feb. 15.
McGowan retired from Northern Natural Gas in 2006. He ran for the MUD board in 2008, narrowly losing in the general election.
Northern Natural Gas ships gas to MUD. In choosing McGowan, board members cited his experience and interest in the board as evidenced by his attending board meetings before and after the election.
McGowan was chosen among 11 finalists, including Begley's son, Jim. More than 40 people had applied for the position.
The finalists presented their qualifications and reasons they wanted to be on the board in five-minute presentations Monday morning. The board voted shortly afterward.
McGowan said he plans to seek election when his current term runs out in 2012.
The board position pays $1,120 a month.
