Couple flee Neb. house fire

GIBBON, Neb. (AP) — A couple escaped from a fire that severely damaged their home in the south-central Nebraska town of Gibbon.

Fire officials say the fire started around 3 p.m. Sunday and took about an hour to knock down.

Investigators haven’t identified the cause the blaze, but homeowner Elmer Schroer said he suspected a bad wire in his water cooler.

Schroer had gone into his kitchen for a drink and smelled what he thought was a hot wire. Schroer said he felt the wires but found nothing amiss. Shortly after he left the kitchen, he looked in and saw flames going up to the ceiling.

Schroer said he and his wife had recently paid off the home’s mortgage. The house likely will be a total loss.
