Lion may come after little lamb

First, the good news: cloudy skies over the metro area should part by midweek and bring warmer conditions and sunshine.

The bad news: it could rain and snow by the weekend.

Welcome to March.

The region escaped winter's bitter cold and enjoyed highs in the mid-40s last week, and warmer weather is on its way this week as the first day of spring approaches.

“There is hope on the horizon here,” said Van DeWald of the National Weather Service office in Valley.

Clouds are expected to dissipate by midweek, DeWald said. Highs will flirt with the 60-degree mark by Thursday.

But then a low-pressure system will arrive from the Rockies, bringing rain that is expected to begin Thursday night and could persist through Friday, DeWald said. Colder weather will return on Friday as well, with temperatures no higher than the low 40s.

Rain could turn to snow starting Friday night, DeWald said, and highs on Saturday — the official start of spring — will likely be in the upper 30s.

At this point, it's too early to tell how much snow might fall.

“Historically, we've had some of our bigger snows in March,” DeWald said. “I'm not saying that's going to happen this time, but we're not out of the woods yet.”
