MANHATTAN, Kan. — Coming into Tuesday's contest at Kansas State, Creighton's recent success — or lack thereof — in Manhattan and against ranked teams had been equally frustrating: The Bluejays were 13-33-1 all-time at K-State with only four wins since 1990. And they were 0-8 in their last eight games against the Top 25.
But thanks to Creighton's 7-4 win against the Wildcats, ranked No. 25 in the coaches poll, the Jays got two slumps off their back. CU improved to 9-4, snapping a seven-game winning streak by Kansas State (13-3).
CU went into the eighth inning clinging to a 3-2 lead. Carson Vitale punctuated a four-run eighth with a two-run homer. Vitale, who finished 2 for 4 Tuesday, is hitting .625 (5 for 8) with two home runs and three RBIs in three games against Kansas State.
Mark Winkelman (2-0) was one of several CU pitchers to throw, and he earned the victory with a perfect sixth inning.
Jimmy Swift also homered for CU, which gave the Jays a 3-2 lead in the seventh. T.J. Roemmich added two hits and two RBIs.
Robbie Knight also moved into sole possession of sixth place on the NCAA's all-time hit-by-pitch list with a first-inning plunking
The Jays' last win against a non-Missouri Valley Conference team that was ranked came March 2, 2007, against No. 25 Missouri.
Next up for Creighton is a three-game set at Illinois-Chicago. Friday's contest will start at 4 p.m, with Saturday and Sunday starts at 1 p.m.
