Lincoln's downtown was the scene of an early morning derailment that left 15 Burlington Northern Santa Fe cars on their sides.
The derailment was reported shortly after 2 a.m. when 23 cars left the tracks in Burlington Northern's rail yard on O Street, just west of downtown. Nobody was injured.
The derailment involved mostly tankers, the majority of which were classified as empty. The one tanker that was full was carrying chlorine. It did not leak.
Authorities temporarily shut down nearby U.S. Highway 77 and West O Street. But traffic had returned to normal before the morning commute.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
