NORTH PLATTE — An unidentified woman was rescued from the Platte River early Monday after being found wandering in the river with no idea where she was, according to Lincoln County Chief Deputy Sheriff Dean Sparks.
Sparks said witnesses called the Sheriff’s Office early Monday, and deputies reached the river about 3 a.m. The woman was found on an island in the middle of the now fast-flowing river.
According to Sparks, deputies attempted to make verbal contact with the woman, who continued to walk away from her would-be rescuers. Sparks said deputies called the North Platte Fire Department, which responded with a ladder truck. Extending the ladder across the river, firefighters were able to rescue the woman.
Sparks said the woman’s behavior was similar to being “highly intoxicated,” but the Sheriff’s Office is investigating the possibility of a date-rape drug being present. She was taken to Great Plains Regional Medical Center, where she was treated for hypothermia.
