Digital health info gets $6.8M

LINCOLN (AP) — Nebraska has been awarded more than $6.8 million in federal stimulus funding for the state’s digital health information exchange.

The Nebraska Health Information Initiative provides the technical infrastructure for the exchange project, which has been under development since 2005.

The office of Gov. Dave Heineman says the money will help expand the system.

The exchange connects the digital medical records already used by many health care providers. It lets doctors, nurses, pharmacists and other medical professionals quickly access patient data.

The state says the exchange has records of more than 1.5 million patients of Nebraska hospitals.
