A 10-year-old boy was caught with marijuana Monday at Howard Kennedy Elementary School.
Other students told a teacher that the boy had pot with him at school and had been showing it to others. According to a police report, less than an ounce of pot was found in a trash can in an upstairs boys bathroom.
The boy later told authorities he found the pot near his home.
Police said it is rare for someone so young to be caught with pot.
Omaha Public Schools spokeswoman Luanne Nelson said the boy was not selling or distributing the marijuana.
Nelson said the district's code of conduct policy was enforced, though she could not say what action was taken. Disciplinary action could range from suspension to expulsion.
Police cited the boy on suspicion of possession of marijuana. He was released to his mother.
