NORWALK, Iowa — Nebraska native Joe McFarland was one of five men who were recently inducted into the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame.
Other inductees were John Lewis, a coach at Cedar Rapids; Harley Schieffer, a coach at Clarinda; John Waddle, a coach at Coon Rapids; and Bill Boyd, an umpire from New Hampton.
McFarland, a 1954 graduate of Sumner (Neb.) High School, compiled a 313-196 record in 20 years at Norwalk, where his teams won 11 conference championships, two sectional titles, four district championships and the 1982 state title.
He spent 40 years in education and coaching before retiring in 1998. He resumed coaching at Diagonal, Iowa, for one year in 2002, when his baseball team won a district championship but lost in substate.
