WASHINGTON -- Speeding up Nebraska road construction projects will be the goal of a March 30 transportation summit in Lincoln, Sen. Ben Nelson, D-Neb., announced Wednesday.
Nelson said the goal is to get federal, state and local officials together to work out any issues that may be delaying projects.
"We must make sure that road funds are available in Nebraska and that they are spent on appropriate projects just as soon as possible," Nelson said during a conference call with reporters.
Federal Highway Administrator Victor Mendez and state Sen. Deb Fischer. chairwoman of the Transportation Committee, plan to attend and officials with the Nebraska Department of Roads officials have been invited, Nelson said.
The public is welcome to attend the summit, which will be held from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Lincoln City Council chambers, he said.
Road projects put people to work, improve safety and foster much needed economic development, he said.
"At the end of the summit, I hope the road ahead will be clear to everyone and that soon Nebraskans will see more needed upgrades and maintenance work underway on our highways and byways," Nelson said.
