SXSW

If you haven’t heard, I’m in Austin, Texas, for South by Southwest now through the weekend. (If you didn’t read my SXSW preview yet, head to Omaha.com/Music.) With about 2,000 bands performing, it’s like a musical Holy Land. I’ll be attending as many parties, shows and showcases as I can from when I arrive Wednesday morning through the weekend.

While I’m at SXSW, you can expect video interviews with the eight area bands performing there; stories, observations and reviews from my experiences; daily updates in the paper, on Omaha.com and on my blog; and updates through Twitter.

If you’re not headed to Austin, there’s plenty going on here at home. Check out these local performances:

Capslock Friday

Who doesn’t love some angry, loud, female-fronted punk? Singer Ashley Smith lends some pop to punk while energetic guitar and frenzied drumming keep the volume level up on songs such as “15 Seconds” and “If You Go.” Check out their songs at MySpace.com/CapslockFriday.

Details: With Lights Out Dancing, the Broadcast, Icarus the Owl at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Sokol Underground. $8 at the door.

Night of Beastie Boys

Local MCs Buck Bowen and Surreal will do a Beastie Boys DJ tribute, playing everything from the Beasties’ early days up to their most recent records.

Details: 9 p.m. Sunday at the Waiting Room. $2 at the door.

Ten Club

Pearl Jam announced an upcoming tour, but it’s skipping Omaha again. Save yourself the money from tickets and a road trip and check out local PJ tribute band Ten Club. Opening the show is Surfer Rosa, a Pixies tribute.

Details: 9 p.m. Friday at the Waiting Room. $7 at the door.
