Community college raises tuition

Western Nebraska Community College students will pay slightly more tuition and higher room and board after its board approved a tuition increase Wednesday.

The board approved a $2 increase in tuition, bringing tuition to $70 a credit hour at the college, which has campuses in Scottsbluff, Sidney and Alliance. Fees will increase $2 a credit hour, bringing student fees to $15 an hour.

Bill Knapper, WNCC dean of administrative services, said the $2 increase to fees would be directed toward providing more scholarships to students in targeted programs, likely to students enrolling in programs currently experiencing low enrollment rates. The college is planning to provide scholarships in those programs.

Overall, the increases will result in a 4.9 percent increase in tuition and student fees for an in-state student and students from Colorado, Wyoming and South Dakota. Out-of-state students will see an increase of $4 per credit hour to $84 a credit hour.

During the meeting, the college board also approved establishing a scholarship program for high school students as a permanent program. Over the past three years, the college has been piloting a “Three4Free” program. The program provides scholarships to students entering into their junior or senior year in high school within the 12½ county service area to attend one class for free during the summer session.
