DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Attorney General Tom Miller wants state and federal officials to fund a program to help Iowans facing foreclosure.
Miller on Thursday said the Iowa Mortgage Help Hotline, which provides counseling, intervention and legal services, could close as early as June.
Miller is urging the Legislature to authorize the Iowa Finance Authority to use existing money in a housing program to provide some of the $750,000 to $1 million estimated to help keep the program going until the end of the year. Miller also is also asking Congress and the governor for help.
Miller says a federal grant that supplies most of the funding has been cut, but more money should be available in January.
Over 9,000 Iowans have sought help through the hot line, which started in 2008.
