Iowa bedbugs bring call for fix

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Two Iowa lawmakers are calling for quick action over an alleged bedbug problem at two Des Moines apartment buildings for the elderly and disabled.

Sen. Matt McCoy and Sen. Jack Hatch, both Des Moines Democrats are demanding city housing officials provide them with a plan to eradicate the bedbugs.

McCoy and Hatch, in an e-mail to housing officials on Wednesday, want to know more about the infestation at Ligutti Tower and Elsie Mason Manor and why it hasn't been resolved.

A class-action lawsuit was filed in Polk County alleging "unconscionable" living conditions at the apartments.

The president of American Baptist Homes of the Midwest, a Minnesota management firm, was expected in Des Moines on Thursday to talk with on-site managers about the problem.
