The bright smile on Melissa Newburn's face illuminates what may have been the biggest news in the metro area Wednesday: After 11 consecutive, cloudy days, the sun reappeared.
Just to be sure, I checked with the National Weather Service. Meteorologist Dave Fobert confirmed that the bright foreign object in the sky was indeed the sun. "Late winter sunshine," is how Fobert jokingly described it.
The metro area hasn't had a sunny day since March 5, and that was one of only two to occur this month.
Today, should give us even more to smile about. Temperatures are forecast to rise into the low 60s, and skies are likely to be mostly sunny. A number of golf courses are open. Five golfers had made the rounds at Spring Lake Golf Course by early afternoon.
But get out while you can.
Friday is likely to be miserable, rainy, windy and cold. A cold front is expected to blow in Thursday night. In its wake, there's a 90 percent chance of rain and winds are likely to gust to nearly 25 mph. The rain should depart by early Saturday but cooler temperatures are likely to linger through the weekend.
