A California man who came to Omaha seeking steady employment died Friday when the station wagon his son was driving crashed on 156th Street just north of Fort Street.

Samuel Aguilar Garcia, 46, was in the rear passenger seat of the station wagon when his son apparently turned into the path of an oncoming pickup.

His son, 21-year-old Samuel Aguilar Mendez, also of California was arrested on suspicion of misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide and failure to yield. He was booked at the Douglas County Correctional Center and posted bail.

The accident occurred just before 11 a.m. on 156th Street near Robert’s Nursery, Lawn & Landscaping, 6056 N. 156th St.

Emergency medical crews attempted to revive Aguilar Garcia at the scene. He was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Another man who was in the station wagon, Jose Luiz Lira Cervantes, 22, was taken to the medical center in serious condition. An updated condition report was unavailable.

Investigators with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office said Lira Cervantes also was sitting in the rear passenger seat of the station wagon.

The driver of the pickup truck, Nicholas Oswalt, 22, of Omaha was not injured.

The men traveling in the station wagon appeared to be headed for Robert’s Nursery, where they planned to fill out job applications, authorities said.

Aguilar Mendez and another unidentified individual traveling in the station wagon were uninjured.

Staff writers Jason Kuiper and Chip Olsen contributed to this report.
