Jud Gurney

Gurney was radiology expert

Funeral services for Dr. Jud Gurney, longtime professor of radiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Leo Catholic Church, 1920 N. 102nd St.

Gurney, 55, died Thursday at the Nebraska Medical Center from stomach cancer.

The Riverton, Neb., native had specialized in chest radiology. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and his medical degree from UNMC.

Gurney was on the faculty at Creighton University and the Medical College of Wisconsin before he joined UNMC's radiology faculty in 1989.

He moved to the faculty of the Mayo Clinic from 2000 to 2002 before returning to UNMC in 2002, when he was named to the position he held at the time of his death the Charles A. Dobry Professor of Diagnostic Radiology.

Less than two months ago, he received the Silver Medal Award from the Nebraska Radiological Society. The award is the highest honor the society gives to recognize individuals for exceptional quality and service in their professional and personal lives. It has been awarded only nine times in 28 years.

“Jud was recognized nationally and internationally as an expert in his field,” said Dr. Craig Walker, professor and chairman of the UNMC Department of Radiology. “The university has lost an outstanding physician and teacher.”

Survivors include his wife, Mary; daughter, Antonia “Annie”; and son, Ian.
